Ross leads the team with a .338 average

September 7th, 2007 — article by

Cody goes two for three tonite with two doubles, an RBI, a walk, and a run to help the Marlins beat the Phillies 6-3. Wow…….Ross is in a 9 game hitting streak and batting .500 in the last 9 games. Now those are numbers. I hope the Marlins have found their center fielder. I think he has earned his spot. All of this has been off right handed pitchers. So much for labeling. So much for being a streaky hitter. Fredi even admitted that Ross was one of the Marlins best defensive players. And just think, it all started with Willingham getting hurt and Cody getting a chance to play. Way to go Cody……………………………..

Way to go uh Fredi. The season might be over for any playoff hopes for the Marlins but it should be said that they might have found their centerfielder. The numbers are stacking up for Ross. Too bad he didn’t get 400 at bats this year, if you strapulate his homeruns per at bats he would be hitting a conservative 35 home runs. RBI’s over 100. Those are some strong numbers. I realize that it is hard to strap that with only 130 at bats, but folks those are strong numbers. Let the kid play ball. That is all I have always said.

Cody Ross Jacks 2 of Club Record 5 Homers

September 6th, 2007 — article by

Cody Ross is greeted by Miguel Cabrera

Through three innings, the Florida Marlins mustered just one hit. Then the home runs began. And kept going, and going — until the Phillies were gone. The team tied its record for most home runs hit in a game (5) and won the series.

“You’ve got to give them credit,” said Marlins left fielder Cody Ross, who hit two of Florida’s five home runs. “They went out there and played till the last out — to the last pitch. They made it interesting.”

Ross’ first homer, a 336-foot blast to right field in the fourth frame, scored Mike Jacobs to cut the Phillies’ early lead to 5-3. Miguel Cabrera hit his 31st home run earlier in the inning to make it 5-1.

Then, after pinch-hitter Dontrelle Willis doubled and scored to cut the lead to 5-4 in the fifth, Ross led off the sixth by depositing a 2-1 pitch from Phillies starter Adam Eaton 416 feet over the wall in left field for his 10th home run of the season.

It was Ross’ first multi-homer game of the year — his first since Sept. 11, 2006, against the Mets, when he hit three out. For the Marlins, it was their ninth multi-homer game in 2007, the last coming from Josh Willingham on Aug. 23 in St. Louis.

That sweep was painful

September 5th, 2007 — article by

Kinda sums up the Marlins season being swept by the next to last team in the NL East. I never thought I would be cheering the Marlins to get out of last place. Ah this funny game of baseball. Not so funny most of the time. At least this year. A bad luck season for the starting pitchers on the Fish team…..Sanchez out for the season and then filing a law suit over pay….Johnson coming back strong when he got off the DL and getting hurt again. Nolasco getting hurt… Mitre doing good until the allstar break and then losing it. I think he did get the best of that fan in the dugout tonight after being pulled in the first inning. I have never seen such an attack on a fan… Olson being mediocre all season long along with his off field antics… And then there is Dontrell who has lost his command of the mound. Spotty starts have hampered this one-time Marlins star. Maybe he needs to try out for first base? I really don’t see the Marlins paying him his salary next year. Then there is the closer fiasco with Julio, Benitez and finally getting a good year from Gregg. Did you guys know that Benitez is the highest paid player on the Marlins team making over 8 mill a year. For an ownership that is strapped for payroll, I never understood that move for a washed up closer. Especially when the Marlins had a closer in their bullpen already… Last year I commended the Marlins staff for putting a team together with no money. I guess that was a fluke. Girardi was the key to that success. If Fredi would have coached last year they would have lost a 100 games. I had issues with Girardi last year and I guess owners had issues with him this year as after being voted manager of the year, he has ended up being an announcer in New York. Time will tell if he gets the Yankees job, but I really don’t think he will get Torre’s job. To get back to how Cody did tonight, he hit the ball hard three times but got one double going one for four. I find it interesting that on Marlins O when they had around the basses with Fredi he said Ross would play as long as he is hitting. So make no mistakes Cody, an 0-fer night will put you on the bench. No room for error in Fredi’s eyes… Thats no pressure. Ross has never started enough games to go into a slump… That was the most stupid thing I have ever heard. All the other starters have the luxury of going 0 for 32 or whatever. Their just in a slump. Not Cody, you hit or your out of the game… Bullshit…

Go figure

As soon as I bash someone, they come thru. Cudos for Jacobs hitting a home run last night. Too bad for Cody going two for four with two doubles but missing the grand slam home run. That would have been huge. Bottom line, Ross still went two for four with two doubles. Tonite being (tuesday) Cody goes one for four against the Nats. Ross also had a web jam with a catch in centerfield. I am not going to gloat about Cody but he is by far the best defensive player in the Marlins outfield defense. I hate to crush on Hermida, but he made two bad errors in right field. If it was not for his hitting as of late Hermida would be out of the game.  What good is a hit if you let two runs score? It just sums up a bad season for the Marlins. I am sure Fredi will be back next year just so Loria can save face. Ross has pressured his presence in the Marlins outfield because of injury and a strong batting average. I was very supprised to see Cody start three games in a row with right handed pitchers at the helm. If Willingham never got hurt, Cody would still be sitting the bench. Call it fate or call it being able to come off the bench and kick butt, Ross is doing that. I call that a player at the highest reguard. Anyone with me on that? Give me a break, Ross is hitting at .336. He needs to play or trade at this point. It was interesting to see the call ups tonite against the Nats. Carrol, Abercrombie and another outfielder that I can’t think of at present. I am not sure why the Marlins brought up so many outfielders other than the fact that they don’t have a clue as to might start next year. My whole defense in this situation is Cody should start in left or center or rightfield. . With his prooven bat and prooven defense it should be a no brainer. But we are dealing with the Marlins so enough said…..His numbers alone with lack of playing time will set him up for a trade. My hope is that some team will give this kid a full year at playing his game. He will break out, if not with the Marlins with someone else. Loria says he does plan on keeping Ross for another year. But I think Cody has different plans. If he doesn’t he should. I think there are teams out there that will welcome Cody in open arms. Cody is in a catch 22 in his situation right now…. This kid can play and will, reguardless with what team. You go bitch……….
